As summer approaches, life is bursting across the Southern Great Barrier Reef. From November through March, our underwater world comes alive in a dazzling natural celebration — from the mass coral spawning that transforms the reef into a galaxy of colour, to the gentle arrival of nesting sea turtles along our sandy shores.
Each year, under the glow of the moon, the Southern Great Barrier Reef becomes a nursery for new beginnings. Between 16–20 November, coral colonies across the Capricorn Coast, Gladstone, and Bundaberg regions release millions of tiny eggs and sperm into the sea in perfect synchrony — a spectacular underwater event that ensures the next generation of coral life. It’s a breathtaking reminder of just how connected and resilient our reef truly is.

It supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region.
Witness an ancient life cycle of the animal kingdom as majestic sea turtles make their journey to the shore to lay their eggs. Delight at the sight of their young, hatching weeks later, and making their perilous journey to the sea.
