Marine Conversation Groups the focus of the new Reef Sanctuary Pontoon

In an exciting leap forward for marine education and conservation, the newly inaugurated Reef Sanctuary Pontoon as part of Lady Musgrave Experience’s offering has become a dynamic platform for experiential learning in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. This state-of-the-art facility, designed with sustainability and reef conservation at its core, welcomed its first group of 44 school-aged children for a three-day camp, where they embraced their roles as citizen scientists.

The pontoon features two custom-built levels and is equipped with an underwater observatory and a dive and snorkel platform, making it the perfect base for hands-on eco-educational activities. Local labor and materials were used in its construction, exemplifying a commitment to environmental responsibility.

We welcomed the school for a transformative two-night, three-day camp that highlighted the pontoon as their classroom During their three-day stay, the students engaged in a variety of citizen science activities focused on research and coral monitoring. Guided by passionate marine biologists, the children donned snorkelling gear and plunged into the crystal-clear waters, encountering a vibrant array of marine life. They meticulously documented their findings, from the health of coral reefs to the diversity of fish species and learned the importance of data collection for the ongoing research efforts conducted alongside our Marine Biologist.

“We’re like detectives of the ocean!” exclaimed Mia, a 14-year-old participant, as she spotted a Hawksbill turtle nestled amongst the coral gardens. Her enthusiasm echoed the sentiments of her peers, who were equally inspired by the breathtaking underwater world and eager to contribute to its protection.

The educational program not only provided hands-on learning experiences but also incorporated the Eye on the Reef network, allowing students to report their findings to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. This initiative ensures that the data gathered by young scientists contributes to the broader understanding of marine ecosystems and supports effective management strategies to safeguard the reef.

“By the end of the camp, these students had transformed into passionate advocates for marine conservation,” said Director Brett Lakey “Their newfound knowledge is not only vital for their own growth but will also benefit the reef’s future.”

On the final day of their camp, the children gathered in the pontoon’s "classroom" to share their insights with one another. Overlooking the waters of Lady Musgrave Lagoon they presented their findings, showcasing the critical role they played in monitoring the health of the reef. The sense of community and shared purpose fuelled their commitment to preserving the marine environment.

The Reef Sanctuary Pontoon is now open for group bookings for schools, specialized tour groups, and private organizations interested in citizen science activities. With a range of programs aimed at enhancing marine education and research, the pontoon promises to play a crucial role in fostering the next generation of marine biologists and environmental advocates.

As the students left the pontoon, their minds brimming with knowledge and passion for the ocean, the commitment to marine conservation echoed in their hearts. The Reef Sanctuary Pontoon stands ready to inspire more young minds in its mission to protect one of the world’s most precious natural treasures—the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
