Travellers Rest 1770 joins Savannah Guides as Certified Ecotourism Enterprise

Travellers Rest 1770, a nature-based campground and tour operation nestled in the beachside town of Agnes Water on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, is proud to announce its official recognition as a Savannah Guides Enterprise. This milestone marks a significant evolution in the business’s journey, which began in March 2020 and has flourished over the past five years under the stewardship of founders Mike and Michi.

In 2024, Travellers Rest 1770 achieved Ecotourism Australia Certification and the prestigious Eco Guide Certification, a turning point that clarified the couple’s vision and values. These achievements laid the foundation for their decision to align with Savannah Guides, a network of professional tour guides dedicated to interpreting the natural and cultural heritage of Australia’s savannah regions.

Mike’s participation in the Savannah Guides Field School in Injune and Carnarvon Gorge was instrumental in this transition. The experience underscored the value of professional mentorship, peer support, and connection with like-minded individuals—elements that are vital in the tourism industry.

“Our journey has been deeply enriched by the support of the Southern Great Barrier Reef Mentorship Program, led by Amanda Kruse, and our collaboration with Gladstone and Bundaberg Tourism,” said Michi. “These partnerships have helped us become trade-ready and enabled us to showcase our offerings at the Australian Tourism Exchange in Brisbane, where we connected with global buyers.”

Travellers Rest 1770 also proudly participated in the Southern Great Barrier Reef Roadshow across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, further expanding their industry presence and reinforcing their role as a leading operator in the region.

Adding to the excitement, Mike has been named a finalist for Queensland’s Top Tour Guide, an honour presented by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council. The results will be announced in the upcoming edition of Southern Great Barrier Reef News.

“We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come,” said Mike. “Becoming a Savannah Guide and joining this respected network is a dream come true. We’re excited to continue growing, learning, and sharing the beauty of this region with visitors from around the world.”
